Garfield High School
Horticulture Development Program - Seattle, WA
About the Program:
Garfield Horticulture Development Program has begun to provide students a career pipeline into the horticulture field. The initial phase of the program will be a two year project. The first year will revolve around learning and developing skills related to the horticulture field. Students will learn about plant biology, garden design, ecology, and other topics that support the emphasis of year two, a redevelopment of a community garden on campus.Due to budget cuts, the garden has been unused for over 10 years and the goal is to renovate that space into something that can support the school community, as a hands-on horticulture space and as an outdoor classroom for science classes. While engaging in the process of the garden renovation, students will be working toward statewide Professional Horticulture Certification.
